Symantec Endpoing Protection Manager MR4 "Unable to communicate with reporting component"
I did another Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager install the other day which normally I have no issues with using MR4. However this time I encountered an error message that I had seen with previous releases.
To resolve this error open the IIS Manager and go to the properties of the DefaultAppPool. Select the Identity tab and change it to local system.
You will receive the following prompt warning you that it is a potential security risk, however since this is not a public facing web server it should be fine to click Yes. To be honest I don' t know the security ramifications of changing this option, however this is what Symantec told me to do so I am passing on the workaround. Once you click Yes now when you log into Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager and all the tabs should working.
The Java Virtual Machine has exited with a code of 1, the service is being stopped
If you receive this error in your application event log and find that your Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager service will not start follow the instructions below and it should resolve your issue.
1. Open <drive>\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\tomcat\conf\server.xml
2. Change port="8005" to 8006 and save the file
3. Start the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager service and you should be able to log in.
Catastrophic Error Message
While upgrading Symantec System Recovery 8.0 to 8.5 I received the error message below. Apparently whatever problem(s) it had were "catastrophic" which Dictionary.com defines as "a sudden and widespread disaster: the catastrophe of war." which is how I tend to think of the word, however it is also defined as "any misfortune, mishap, or failure; fiasco: The play was so poor our whole evening was a catastrophe." in which case I suppose I can understand using the word.

In any event I rebooted as it requires you to do and logged in when the server came back up. After logging in the setup wizard launched I received the following error. I found a solution to the problem on Symantec's forums by Googling the error message Which advised me to run C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery\Fixinstall.bat and it did indeed resolve the issue.
